Term One 2021

Week 2-4

This has been a busy week for the Kindies. They have started to work in teams and rotate through activities. The students have done an excellent job and need to be commended for their efforts.
A special thanks to all parents for their quick response to notes sent home and for taking the time to attend our Kindy Information Session.

Assembly:
This Friday the 26th February is a Junior Assembly. A couple of students from each Kindy group will receive merit awards at these assemblies, throughout the year. Parents of these children will be notified and are encouraged to attend, especially if it is not their rostered Kindy day. Students wear school uniform and sit with their class.

Literacy:
We are learning to recognise our name, this includes finding our name tag on our bag shelf, finding our names inside the classroom, and playing name games during our mat sessions. They have also been learning the initial sound their name starts with e.g. Andrew starts with A A A. Please get your child to practise writing their name on their placemats, that were given out during the Parent information session. These are written in the font that Wattle Grove follows.
Over the next three weeks the students will be learning one initial letter sound per week. They are as follows:
Apple starts with Aa - Aa – Aa (already taught)
Letter formation songs
Slide down twice and make a bridge to make an uppercase A.
Backward circle and end with a kick to make a lowercase a.
Snake starts with Ss - Ss - Ss.
Big curve turn, big curve stop to make an uppercase S
Little curve turn, little curve stop to make a lowercase s.
Turtle starts with Tt - Tt – Tt.
Slide right down and then a sideways hat to make an uppercase T
Long line down then a kick and a slash to make a lowercase t.

Focus is on the initial phonic sound NOT the letter name. To reinforce letter sounds please have a look around your home for an object that starts with one of these letters and bring it in to add to our class ‘Phonic Table.’ (Please label items so that they can be returned).
Try the website www.starfall.com for learning the initial alphabet sounds.

Numeracy:
We are learning to identify the written numerals 1 (completed) to 3 and matching concrete objects using one to one correspondence. The students are also learning to touch count each object only once when counting “How many?”

Science:
To link with our theme for first term “I Am Special” the focus for science will be our five senses. We will be exploring how our senses help us live, learn, identify and interact with the world around using the sense of sight, touch, hearing, taste and smell. Senses are also very important to our well-being. Students will be involved in investigations using various activities e.g. using magnifying glasses, ‘feely’ bags, identifying various sounds, taste sort and ‘smelly’ tissue flowers! Keep an eye on the blog to view the photos.

Health: (Changing Health Acting Together)
This term students will be learning about pedestrian safety. For example, knowing how to cross the road safely and understanding what various road signs and signals mean. This week we will be outside in our outdoor play area practicing how to cross the road safely using our road mats and signs and using our helmets when riding our bikes.

HASS:
Thank you once again to the families who have already brought in their family photos. Students will use these for a Speaking and Listening task. The students are very excited to tell their friends and teachers all about their family! If your child has not brought in their family photo, please send one in by the end of this week.

We look forward to getting to know everyone better and having fun learning together!

As always if there are any queries or concerns, please speak to the class teacher.

Room 4's Radiant Reds

WELCOME TO ROOM 4's RADIANT RED GROUP

CELEBRATING AUSTRALIA DAY 2021
(raising funds for the bush fire appeal)

Hello and Welcome to the Kindy Class of 2021!

I am Mrs Gloria Fletcher and I am the Red Group Class Teacher in Room 4. Mrs Emma Cilfone is the Class Teacher on Wednesday and Mrs Katherine Chaplyn is the Education Assistant. We are so excited to be teaching your child this year. Welcome back to families who have other children at Wattle Grove Primary and a warm welcome to those who are new to the school. We are looking forward to a productive year with our 2021 Kindergarten students.

It is wonderful to see children settling into the routines at school, after a delayed start to the year. Starting school is a big step for children (and parents) so please don’t hesitate to speak with us if you have questions, concerns, or information you would like to share.

A few Kindergarten details for your information:

RED GROUP attends school on TUESDAYS and FRIDAYS and ALTERNATE WEDNESDAYS.

School times on Wednesday and Friday are 8.45am to 3.05pm. On Tuesday school finishes early at 2.30pm.

The classroom doors will open at 8.30am. If you arrive prior to 8.30am you must wait outside the classroom with your child. If someone other than yourself is picking your Kindergarten child up, we will need a written note on the day or ring and inform the front office who will pass on the information to us. If this is going to be a regular arrangement (e.g. grandparents, day care, family friend) you will need to add their names to your child’s contact list at the office).

Each day your child will need to bring recess and lunch, a drink bottle of water (no cordial or juice please). Children are not to bring toys to school unless it is required for an activity.

We are looking forward to getting to know you all.

Notes sent home:

As part of the Kindergarten Speaking and Listening program and theme “I AM SPECIAL” the children will be involved in sharing news about their families. We ask that your child please bring in a postcard size family photo next week to show and share with the class. Photos need to be brought in by the 26th February. Photos will be used in a portfolio task. Below are some suggestions to guide them prepare for what they could talk about ….

  • Names of the people in the photo and relationship to them.
  • Parent’s work/jobs.
  • Family’s country of origin.

Thank you for your cooperation
